Innovative Gear - Zartman Rigging

This section of Alpinesavvy highlights small companies, inventors, artists and other superb humans who make exceptional climbing-related gear.

  • If you know a company that belongs on these pages, please let me know.

  • I don't get any sort of advertising fees / benefits / kickbacks from these pages. I simply want to showcase cool companies to a wider audience.

  • Occasionally these companies may give me a product to review. If that happens, I’ll tell you.

How about a sling with zero seams or stitching?

Ben Zartman is the man behind Zartman Rigging, a New England based sailing expert and manufacturer of spliced high end climbing soft goods.

Ben is an expert and splicing high-tech cord, such as Dyneema. While more labor-intensive than sewing, this results in a overall stronger product with no seam or stitching. This is much more common in the sailing world than in climbing, and Ben uses this skill to craft some very interesting gear. (Even better, it’s UIAA certified.)

  • One thing on Ben’s website that really caught my eye are the Seamless Friction Loops. You know when you're trying to make a friction hitch with a small loop, and the darn stitching always gets in the way? Not a problem with a loop when it's spliced. See photos below.

  • Another cool looking product is the Seamless Micro Loop. One minor hassle of big wall climbing is trying to fit /tie chunky cord or webbing onto hooks. These micro loops look perfect, low profile, quick girth hitch, good to go.

Seamless Micro Loop - perfect for hooks

Seamless slings - Super strong and again, no seams

It's not all soft goods. Check this out: the “micro” belay / rappel plate designed for 6 mm cord.
