As a former cartographer and longtime map geek, I’m fascinated by the various ways people have devised to depict our three-dimensional world in a way that's aesthetic and educational.
Justin Healy, an Oregon based geologist, cartographer and artist, has a novel way to do this. Justin creates amazing three-dimensional terrain models, combining high tech map and digital terrain model wizardry with meticulous handcrafted care. His models are not cut from a single block of material, but rather are hand assembled, layer by layer.
He currently has terrain models of Crater Lake and several major Oregon peaks including Mt. Hood, and will soon be adding more.
